St. John's Church in West Sussex has taken down the crucifix which used to be displayed on the outside of the building (additional pix here and here). The dramatic 10-ft image, created in the 1960s and sculpted out of coal ash and resin was "putting people off."
The church now wants to portray "an accurate biblical picture of the crucifixion as a moment of hopefulness for the world, and not one of despair." This new "accurate biblical picture" will be conveyed via a £12,000 stainless steel empty cross of contemporary design.
